Understand Teams, Channels and Chat

Byte-size Bulletin by Simon Heath in Tips, Microsoft Teams on Nov 5, 2020

Understanding the difference between Teams, Channels and Chats is fundamental to to working efficiently in Microsoft Teams. Ideally, you don't want to be distracting people with information irrelevant to them. So, knowing what communication group to use or when to create new ones are important skills.

Some other important information (at the time we created the tip):
  • Channels inherit the same members as their parental Team.
  • You can create a private Channel with a select subset, but those private Channels behave differently. e.g. you cannot schedule a meeting in a private Channel - only start an ad hoc meeting.
  • Chat supports up to 300 people and a Channel up to 10,000 people.
