According to a Which? report millions of users could be at risk from their home routers. The device that enables connection to the Internet.
Since many people are working from home the risks can effectively knock on to companies.
It’s a good idea for businesses to educate staff and encourage a security-first mindset whether at home or work.
Which?’s report identifies two main areas of risk and provides help for home users on what to do:
- Many routers use default passwords that are never changed, providing easy access for hackers.
- Firmware is not updated which means that security improvements are not applied. In addition, performance may not be as good as it should be.
We advocate businesses reduce risk and boost productivity by equipping key staff with a dedicated connection and firewall/router. However, we also recognise this is not always practical, so here is Which?’s guidance on the routers they tested and remedial steps.
