Reporting phishing emails

Written by Simon Heath | May 11, 2021

We tend to think of phishing emails as an irritation to be dealt with by us as individuals and businesses. Handling the problem tends to stop when we ask IT to deal with it and we hold training sessions to update colleagues to the risks.

Of course, technical measures and security awareness training are important parts of our defence. But increasingly police, governments, manufacturers and agencies are asking us to report such crimes to protect the wider community and stop the crimes at their source.

Here are two tips on how to report phishing crimes:

  1. Forward any suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk. The National Cyber Security Centre’s Suspicious Email Reporting Service has investigated millions of reports and closed thousands of sites.
  2. However, if you have fallen victim to the crime of phishing instead of using the above service, report it to the police at Action Fraud.
